B-25 Mitchell History:
The B25 Mitchell was introduced beginning with the 65th Mitchell
at Inglewood. The main difference between the B-25 and the B-25A was
the B25B Mitchell has a much heavier defensive armament. The B25
also introduced the use of L-type power operated turret installed on
the top rear of the fuselage. In addition to this was a pair of 0.50
inch machine guns mounted in a solid Bendix remotely controlled
ventral turret.
Other new features of the B-25B were as follows: the stowable
0.30 inch waist gun was removed, the side hatches with their
Plexiglas windows were reduced in size, the 0.30 inch machine gun
was retained, the 0.50 inch tail gun was eliminated and the armor
plate in the extreme tail was eliminated.
The crew of B25B Mitchell is composed of a pilot, co-pilot,
bombardier, navigator and radio operator. The additional armament of
the B25B caused the weight to creep up to 20,000 pounds when empty
and 28,460 pounds when fully loaded. The maximum speed of the B-25B
Mitchell is 300 mph at 15,000 feet. On August 1941, the first 14
B25B Mitchells were accepted. The 17th Bombardment group was the
first one to use the B-25B Mitchell.
The B25C Mitchell was the second mass produced edition of
Mitchell. The B-25C Mitchell was identical to B-25D the only
difference is the location where it was manufactured. Like the
B-25B, the B25C was also built in Inglewood, California. There was a
total of 3,915 B25C and B25D Mitchell that were built. One of the
most famous B-25C was nicknamed Patches. By the end of the war the
said B-25C aircraft had completed more than 300 missions.
The B25C Mitchell was an improved version of the B25B. The B-25C
was also used in United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands and Soviet
Union.
