B-24D Liberator History:
The B-24D was the
first mass-produced model of the B-24, incorporating turbocharged
engines and increased fuel capacity. It also has three more
additional armament of 0.50 caliber machine guns. The B-24D is one
of the heaviest aircraft in the world which is comparable with the
British Stirling Lancaster and Halifax. There were also several
B-24Ds and Es converted into C-109 tankers, being used in theaters
but were mostly employed transporting fuel in the CBI theater.
The B-24D's large scale production garnered orders from
1940-1942. During the production, the tunnel gun in the belly was
replaced by a remote-sited Bendix belly turret and this was later
replaced by a Sperry ball turret. Cheek guns were added to the
B-24D. A famous B-24D was the Lady Be Good, which became the basis
for the movie Sole Survivor, a 1970 film.
