B-17 Flying Fortress Memphis Belle History:
The "Memphis Belle" of the 324th BS assumed its place in history
in May, 1943 as the first B-17 Flying Fortress to have completed 25
missions. Both the plane and crew returned to the States for a grand
tour to promote the War Effort .
The B-17F Flying Fortress or the Memphis Belle was built by the
Boeing Aircraft Co. It became famous for being the first heavy
bomber in Hitler's European War. It was released and began its
operations during the World War II against German industrial
targets. Reporter Richard Williams was the one who called it the
Flying Fortress due to its capability to fly very high, do long
range bombing and defend itself. The name "Memphis Belle" is from
the name of the pilot's wartime sweetheart Ms. Margaret Polk.
The B-17F is also known for completing its 25 missions without
losing any of its crew. Thus, it was loved by many for bringing the
pilots home safely despite all the dangerous battle they had to
face. Not to mention, it was the very first aircraft to make this
record in history. Flying Fortress is famous for its excellent
durability and great survivability.
The Memphis Belle dropped 60 tons of bombs over Germany, France
and Belgium. And during the said 25 missions the aircraft flew 148
hours, 50 minutes and covered more than 20,000 combat miles. In
history, it was the only aircraft that has its own file in the Air
Force Film Depository. After 44 years since its 25th battle, The
Memphis Pavilion was made for the famous B-17F Flying Fortress. The
Air Force declared it as a national historic treasure and will be
forever remembered as one of the most remarkable aircraft made for
the US Army Corps.
