USS Forrestal CV-59 History:
The USS Forrestal CV-59 was the first super-carrier in the world
and was the lead ship of the Forrestal of which all four carriers
have been decommissioned during the 1990.
Forrestal was commissioned on October 1, 1956 and officially
joined the fleet. In the fall of 1956, Forrestal assisted
forces in the Mediterranean during the Suez crisis. On October 30,
1963, Lt. James H. Flatley III's crew completed 21 unarrested full
stop landings and 21 unassisted take-offs onboard Forrestal. By
doing so, the plane and crew became the largest and heaviest
airplane to land on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, a record that
holds to this day. Forrestal departed Norfolk in June 1967, for
duties in the waters off Vietnam.
Forrestal deployed to the Mediterranean twelve times between 1968
and 1986. In March 1973, Forrestal conducted rescue operations in
the flooded Medjerda River Valley near Tunis. On July 4, 1976,
Forrestal became the host ship for the International Naval Review in
New York City. Forrestal transited the Suez Canal for the first time
in 28 years of its history. Forrestal underwent a $550 million
Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) designed to extend her useful
life for another 15-20 years.
Forrestal completed its 19th major deployment on October 7, 1988,
after operating 108 consecutive days underway, making port calls
totaling 15 days and operations in three oceans. During the
deployment, Forrestal received the Meritorious Unit Citation.
Forrestal participated in New York City's fleet in May 1989 and then
commenced preparations for its next deployment.
From August 1990 through March 1991, Forrestal constantly readied
itself in anticipation of deployment in support of Operations Desert
Shield and Desert Storm but the call never came. Forrestal commenced
its 21st and final operational deployment on May 30, 1991.
During this time, Forrestal provided air power presence and airborne
intelligence support to the Combined Joint Task Forces of Operation
Provide Comfort. Forrestal changed homeports from Mayport to
Pensacola on February 5, 1992 and was redesignated as AVT-59,
relieving USS Lexington.
USS Forrestal was decommissioned in Philadelphia on September 11,
1993 and was removed from the navy register. On December 6, 1997, a
second ceremony was held on Forrestal's flight deck to remember
Pearl Harbor.
