of VC-5, launched an AJ-1 Savage heavy attack bomber. On

carrier qualifications on board Coral Sea, introducing this
long-range attack bomber to carrier operations. On September
9, 1950 to February 1, 1951, Coral Sea returned to the Mediterranean
Sea for service with the Sixth Fleet. On March 20, 1951, upon
preparation for its return to the Mediterranean Sea, it underwent
overhaul and local operations. as well as training with Air Group

May 24, 1957, Coral Sea was decommissioned at the Puget Sound Naval
Shipyard and received a major conversion to SCB-110A. Upon its

scrapping was delayed due to numerous financial, legal and
environmental issues. Coral Sea was the largest vessel ever
scrapped up until that date and may be the last large American
aircraft carrier ever to be scrapped. The scrapping continued
for several years until Septmenber 8, 2000, wherein it was
completely scrapped.
