USS Coral Sea CV-43 History:

USS Coral Sea CV-43 was the second ship of the United States Navy nicknamed as the "Ageless Warrior" for its long career.  The ship was built by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia.

On April 21, 1950, the coral Sea, led by Captain John T. Hayward of VC-5, launched an AJ-1 Savage heavy attack bomber.  On August 31, 1950, the remaining pilots of the squadron completed carrier qualifications on board Coral Sea, introducing this long-range attack bomber to carrier operations.  On September 9, 1950 to February 1, 1951, Coral Sea returned to the Mediterranean Sea for service with the Sixth Fleet.  On March 20, 1951, upon preparation for its return to the Mediterranean Sea, it underwent overhaul and local operations. as well as training with Air Group 17.  Coral Sea trained pilots in carrier operations off the Virginia Capes and Mayport, Florida.  On April 1953, coral Sea embarked the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives for a three-day cruise.  On July 23, 1956, Coral Sea sailed for Mayport , Florida, to embark Carrier Air Group 10 and continued on to the Mediterranean Sea on its next tour.  Coral evacuated American citizens during the Suez Crisis.  On May 24, 1957, Coral Sea was decommissioned at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and received a major conversion to SCB-110A.  Upon its completion, Coral Sea was recommissioned and joined the fleet on January 25, 1960.  On September 1960, Coral Sea trained with its new air group along the West Coast and sailed for a tour of duty with the Seventh Fleet in the Far East.  In the early 1960s to 1970s, Coral Sea embarked for several WestPac/Vietnam deployments.  On January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed to end the hostilities in Vietnam.

On April 26, 1990, Coral Sea was decommissioned.  On May 7, 1993, Coral Sea was sold for scrapping by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service to Seawitch Salvage of Baltimore, but the scrapping was delayed due to numerous financial, legal  and environmental issues.  Coral Sea was the largest vessel ever scrapped up until that date and may be the last large American aircraft carrier ever to be scrapped.  The scrapping continued for several years until Septmenber 8, 2000, wherein it was completely scrapped.
