Atlantic 1905 History:
In 1905, Atlantic model ship was featured as one of eleven yachts
that will be competing for the Emperor's Cup put up by Kaiser
Wilhelm for a race between New York and Lizard Head, England and
since then, it became a famous ship. Atlantic's professional
captain, Charles Barr and a veteran of America's Cup campaigns in
Columbia and Reliance, drove the powerful schooner crossing through
a violent gale in 12 days and 4 hours. Atlantic's 348-mile day's run
on May 23 to 24 shows clearly that no other ships comes close and
until 1968, Atlantic's over-all time was still not beaten.
During World War I, The Emperor's Cup was publicly smashed by
Marshall, with the intent of donating the gold to the Red cross. It
was found out later that it was a gold-plated pewter at worth 35$.
Atlantic was sold to James Cox Bradley and the Atlantic was used as
a subchaser tender. After World War I, the ship was sold again to
Cornelius Vanderbilt. Atlantic did race a little. During World War
II, Atlantic was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard serving as an
antisubmarine. Atlantic was brought to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy
for sail training after the war.
