Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird History:
The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced long-range strategic
reconnaissance aircraft developed from the YF-12A and A-12 aircraft
by the Lockheed Skunk Works. It is known by many unofficial
nicknames such as "Habu", "SR", "Lady in Black", "Sled", and most
commonly, the "Blackbird". It is the fastest and highest flying
production aircraft in the world, capable of flying over Mach 3.2
and at 85,000 feet. The Blackbird was in service from 1964 to 1998,
with 12 of the 32 aircraft destroyed in accidents, though none were
lost to enemy action.
Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's
advanced concepts, with the SR-71 being one of the first aircraft
shaped to reduce its radar cross section, though its radar signature
could be tracked by contemporary systems unlike later stealth
aircraft. The SR71 is a large aircraft that can be compared
respectfully to the size of a Boeing 727. It is approximately
103.876 feet long excluding the nose probe and has a wingspan of
55.62 feet. Its maximum takeoff weight is 170,000 lbs.
During the 1970s, the Blackbird set many speed and altitude
records. On September 13, 1974, it set a speed record of 1,435.587
mph flying from London to Los Angeles. On July 28, 1976, it set an
altitude in horizontal flight record at 85,068.997 feet and a speed
over a closed course record of 2,193.167 mph. On September 1, 1974,
the aircraft set a record from New York to London in 1 hour 54
minutes and 56 seconds.
