A-4 Skyhawk flown by John McCain History:
The A-4 Skyhawk proved to be one of the most popular US naval
aircraft due to its small size. Skyhawks were well loved by their
crews for its toughness and agility, along with its low purchase and
operating cost as well as easy maintenance. The A-4 was the Navy's
primary light bomber over both North Vietnam during the early years
of the Vietnam War. Its maiden flight was on June 12, 1952, and it
was delivered to Navy and US Marine Corps squadrons in late 1956.
The Israeli Air Force Skyhawks served as the primary ground
attack aircraft in the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War
during the late 1960s and 1970s. In 1982, Argentine Air Force
Skyhawks sank several ships including the HMS Coventry (D118) and
HMS Antelope (F170). There were 22 Skyhawks lost to all causes in
the six week-long war. A-4s still served well during 1982 Falklands
War, winning against the Royal Navy. In 1991, Kuwaiti Air Force
Skyhawks fought during Operation Desert Storm.
Notable pilots like John McCain had flown the Skyhawk.
