A-4 Skyhawk flown by John McCainL History:
The A-4 Skyhawk is an American attack aircraft designed and
produced by Douglas Aircraft Corporation (McDonnell Douglas). It was
originally designated as A4D under the US Navy's pre-1962
designation system. Notable pilots like John McCain had flown the
Skyhawk. The first A-4 Skyhawk's maiden flight was June 12, 1952 and
was delivered to Navy and US Marine Corps squadrons in late 1956.
The Skyhawk proved to be one of the most popular US naval aircraft
due to its small size. Skyhawks were well loved by their crews for
its toughness and agility, along with its low purchase and operating
cost as well as easy maintenance. Skyhawks were the Navy's primary
light bomber over both North Vietnam during the early years of the
Vietnam War. During the war, there were 362 A-4/TA-4Fs lost to all
causes. The US Navy lost 271 A-4s, the US Marine Corps lost 81 A-4s
and ten TA-4Fs. A total of 32 A-4s were lost to surface-to-air
missiles and one A-4 was aerial combat to a MiG-17 on April 25,
1967.
The Israeli Air Force Skyhawks served as the primary ground
attack aircraft in the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War
during the late 1960s and 1970s. In 1970, The Argentine Air Force
received 25 A-4Bs in 1966 and in 1970, it received another 25, which
were all refurbished in the United States by Lockheed Service
Company. In 1965, there were nearly 130 A-4s delivered. In 1982,
Argentine Air Force Skyhawks sank several ships including the HMS
Coventry (D118) and HMS Antelope (F170). There were 22 Skyhawks lost
to all causes in the six weeks-long war. A-4s still served well
during 1982 Falklands War, winning against the Royal Navy. In 1991,
Kuwaiti Air Force Skyhawks fought during Operation Desert Storm.
There were 36 A-4s delivered in 1970 and there were 23 that survived
the Operation Storm and the Iraqi invasion. Only one A-4 was
destroyed during combat and the remaining Skyhawks were then sold to
Brazil.
