CH-54 Skycrane History:
In May 9 1962, the turbo shaft equipped S-64 Skycrane made its
first flight. A total of 105 S-64 Skycrane helicopters were obtained
by the United States Army which they designated as the CH-54
Skycrane. This helicopter was used in Vietnam for transportation and
retrieval of downed aircrafts. Thanks to General James M. Gavin and
his book Airborne Warfare the Skycrane became successful.
The CH-54 Skycrane was used in operations like aircraft recovery,
ship-to-shore operations and during situations when the load was too
heavy for the CH-47 Chinook. It can also drop 10,000 pounds of bombs
that was used to make landing zones in jungles. The primary function
of the Skycrane is to take heavy loads. This helicopter can take
different types of objects. It can take large and heavy pipes and
even transfer small houses. It can also lift a helicopter or an
engine of a train. It can also help in constructing buildings.
It has three variants. The first one is the YCH-54A; The second
one is the CH-54A; The last one is the CH-4B; The CH-4B has two
4800shp T-73-P700 turbo shafts and 37 were built. It can take up to
three crewmembers. It has a weight of 19,800 pounds when empty and a
maximum weight of 47,000 pounds. It can reach a maximum speed of 130
miles per hour and can climb 1,330 feet per minute.
