J-3 Cub History:
The J-3 Cub is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built
from 1937 to 1947 by Piper Aircraft. It was intended for flight
training with its tandem seating but became one of the most popular
and best-known light aircraft of all time. Its standard yellow paint
has come to be known as "Cub Yellow" or "Lock Haven Yellow"
The J-3 Cub played an integral role in the success of the
Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), which was formed as a result
of the outbreak of hostilities in Europe in 1939 and the growing
realization that the United States might soon be involved in World
War II. The J-3 Cub became the primary trainer aircraft of the CPTP,
with 75 percent of all new pilots having been trained in it. By
war's end, 80 percent of all United States military pilots received
their initial flight training in Cubs.
Piper developed a military variant of the J-3, variously
designated as the L-4, O-59 and NE-1. These models, collectively
nicknamed "Grasshoppers", were extensively used in World War II
for reconnaissance, transporting supplies and medical evacuation.
L-4s were also sometimes equipped with lashed-on infantry bazookas
for ground attack.
After the war, most L-4s were destroyed or sold as surplus, but a
few saw service in the Korean War. The Grasshoppers sold as surplus
in the United States were redesignated as J-3s, but often retained
their wartime glazing and paint.
An icon of the era, the J-3 Cub has long been loved by pilots and
non-pilots alike, with thousands still in use today.
Our handcrafted J-3 Cub model airplane is an exact replica of the
actual aircraft. Accurate details are sealed in by a coat of clear
lacquer, which also gives the model a glossy finish. Each model
comes with a beautiful mahogany-based chrome pedestal and undergoes
several stages of quality control before being put in its box. This
museum quality replica is ideal for personal collections and makes a
delightful gift for war veterans
