B-17G Flying Fortress History:

The B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine strategic bomber aircraft manufactured by Boeing. The B-17 was developed for the U.S Army Air Corps (USAAC). The Flying Fortress was primarily operated by the U.S Army Air Force (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial, civial and military targets. It made its initial flight on July 28 1935 and got introduced in April 1958.

The B-17G variant of the Flying Fortress was the most produced model (8,690 in total), and although basically the same with the earlier “F” model. The difference is that B-17G has a chin turret with 2 50-caliber machine guns and 2 cheek gun positions each mounting single 50 caliber machine guns. In all there were 13 50-caliber machine guns mounted in the "G" model of the Flying Fortress. Powered by 4 Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone 1,200 hp each, the B-17G has a range of 2,000 mi (1,738 nmi, 3,219 km) with 2,722 kg (6,000 lb) bombload and with the maximum speed of 297 mph. The B-17G served in every combat zone, but it is best known for the daylight strategic bombing of German industrial targets.
