AV-8B Harrier History:The AV-8B Harrier is a
single-seat, ground-attack V/STOL aircraft designed to replace the
AV-8A and the A-4M light attack aircraft. The United States Marine
Corps requirement for a V/STOL light attack force has been well
documented since the late 1950's. Combining tactical mobility,
responsiveness, reduced operating cost and basing flexibility, both
afloat and ashore, V/STOL aircraft are particularly well-suited to
the special combat and expeditionary requirements of the Marine
Corps. The aircraft is known as the AV-8B Harrier II in USMC service
and the Harrier GR7/GR9 in British service. Though it shares the
designation letter-number with the earlier AV-8A/C Harrier, the
AV-8B Harrier II was extensively redesigned by McDonnell Douglas.
The main mission of the AV-8B Harrier II is ground attack and
combat air patrol. The Harrier II can hover midair or fly near
supersonic speed. It can also operate from sea bases, all classes of
carriers, amphibious assault ships and shore facilities. The AV-8B
was designed with a larger-area carbon-fiber supercritical wing, a
completely revised and raised cockpit, and advanced aerodynamic
devices. The first production AV-8B aircraft was delivered in
November 1983. Deliveries of night-attack Harrier IIs began in
September 1989. The U.S. Marine Corps received its first Harrier II
Plus aircraft in July 1993, and its first remanufactured Harrier II
Plus in January 1996. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs
flew 3,380 combat sorties, 4,112 combat hours, and delivered more
than six million pounds of ordnance.
