A-1H Skyraider
USAF History:
The AD / A-1 Skyraider, was an attack aircraft
designed by Ed Heinemann and built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Its
first flight was on March 18, 1945 and got introduced 5 years after.
The A1 Skyraider was mostly used by the US Navy and US Marine Corps
during the Korean War. In 1965, A-1 medium attack aircrafts was used
during the Vietnam War, and got replaced by the A-6A Intruder after
some time.
The variant A-1H (AD-6)
Skyraider is a single seat attack aircraft with four 20-mm guns
installed in the wings. Powered by 1X Wright R-3350-26WA radial
engine, the A-1H Skraider main mission is the destruction of ground
targets in support of ground forces. During the Vietnam War, the
USAF used the Skyraider extensively for close air support role. It
was very effective in providing cover for combat rescue missions.
The A-1H can be assigned for long range missions as it can be
equipped with auxiliary fuel tanks internally as well as externally.
It has a maximum speed of 320 mph (280 kn, 520 km/h) and cruise
speed of 295 mph (256 kn, 475 km/h). There were 713 A-1H built.
